Dad uses 2:00 a.m. wake up as learning experience…plus an Easter egg hunt

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (FTN) – What started as a fun morning surprise for a local three-year-old turned into a 2:00 a.m. Easter egg hunt.

The situation parents are calling the ‘Scrambled Egg Night’ happened Monday night.

On Monday night after Alex went to be, Ami decided to hide around 10 Easter eggs in the living room with Thomas minis inside.

“I thought it would be something fun to wake up to,” Ami said.

That plan would have worked, but Alex’s dad, Chris, said the child woke up with a bad dream around 2:00.

“I was on duty. We kind of handle it like a shift in most cases, if he wakes up before 3:00, 3:30…I’m up. If it’s after, Ami handles him,” Chris said.

During the overnight hours, Alex said he wanted a drink, so Chris took him to the kitchen so they could get one.

“That is when he found a hidden Easter egg….I cussed quietly to myself. I knew I wasn’t getting back to bed anytime soon,” Chris told us.

Parents say Alex ultimately found all of the eggs, but by that time, he was pretty fired up and ready to start the day.

“I was good and awake at this point too…so I decided to make it a little adventure. We talked about nighttime and looked at stars, it was actually kind of fun,” Chris said.

He told us they don’t get a chance for many late night learning experiences, so he jumped at the chance.

“We sat on the porch and counted stars…I explained to him that the sun was shining on kiddos on the other side of the Earth. We talked about colors…and the lack of them. Why doesn’t the tree look green? Because it’s dark…you know, stuff like that. It was actually kind of fun,” Chris said.

Ultimately, the pair stayed up until around 3 or 3:30 just hanging out, Chris told us.

“I don’t want to make an every night thing out if it…but I loved the chance to let him learn about something he doesn’t get to see very much. Always see the sunny side…all pun intended,” Chris laughed.
