Saying goodbye: family mourns the loss of birthday balloon

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (FTN) – A Terre Haute family is mourning the loss of a helium happy birthday balloon.

The balloon comes from a March 3rd birthday party for Two-year-old Alex Essex

According to Alex’s parents, the balloon as become part of the family as a fixture on their ceiling for months.

“You could always count on it being there,” Ami Essex said. “You would walk into the living room and it would just be bouncing around in the vaulted ceiling anytime the AC turned on.”

The balloon originally was tied to the back of Alex’s chair during his alphabet themed party this year. Alex’s dad Chris told us he is heart broken.

“I just…it just kept hanging on. When that balloon went to the floor…it’s like a small part of me died,” Chris said.

The discovery came Wednesday morning when Ami walked into the living room to see the balloon floating near the floor.

“It was almost like we took it off of life support. I woke up this morning and it was almost on the floor. I cried,” Ami said.

So far, no foul play is suspected, but an investigation is underway.
