Parents accused of letting toddler nearly starve while making child wait for dinner

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (FTN) – An area toddler nearly starves to death over eight times while waiting for his dinner to cook.

Police say one-year-old Alexander Essex barley pulled through.

It was a piece of cheese that ultimately saved him.

“The cheese needed to be folder into four smaller pieces…he just didn’t have the strength to eat a full one,” Dr. JJ Panda said.

His dinner can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes to prepare and cook.

Police say in this instance it has been over two hours since he last ate a snack.

“It’s neglect, pure and simple, maybe the worst case I’ve ever seen,” Sheriff Woody told us.

His parents have been identified as Chris and Ami Essex.

They’ve also been accused of making him starve a little longer by forcing the toddler to let his food cool down.

We will continue to follow this developing story and bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.
