Toddler wants bedroom door both open and shut, confusing parents and police

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (FTN) – A local toddler is receiving an evaluation after officials say he was acting erratically.

On Thursday, police responded to a potential barricade situation at a bedroom belonging to one-year-old Alexander Essex.

Police say it started when he slammed his bedroom door.

“We made entry into the room, and he pushed the door shut,” Sheriff Woody said.

The child’s parents say they could hear him crying from the other side of the door like he wanted out.

“I first heard the door slam,” Chris, the boy’s father said. “That’s when I went to open it for him, he was crying, he didn’t want it closed.”

The boy’s father went on to say as soon as he opened the door, his son slammed it shut again.

“It went on for about five minutes before we contacted police. Open or shut, in or out? He wanted both…or none?” Chris said.

The situation ended peacefully when police made entry into the bedroom.

Essex remained upset for about 45 seconds.

“We brought the K9 in, and usually that cheers this one up. One look at the dog and he’s a different kid,” Woody told us.

Police say they are just happy this ended without anyone getting hurt,

“We are always happy when these end peacefully. Sometimes a toy gets broken, or he bangs himself into the wall in a fit of rage. We didn’t have that issue here,” Woody said.
